“God Helps Those Who Help Themselves?” — Week 1 Reading Plan
If you grew up hearing “God helps those who help themselves,” you’re not alone. It sounds noble — responsible, even. But Jesus never said that. What He actually said is so much better: “Those who humble themselves will be exalted.” — Luke 18:14
This week, we’re slowing down to hear what God actually said — not just what we’ve always heard. Because real spiritual growth doesn’t come from catchy quotes; it comes from encountering God in His Word.
🪞 How to Read This Week (Simple + Repeatable)
Try using the S.O.A.P. method — a simple rhythm for spending time in Scripture:
- S – Scripture: Read the passage slowly. Write down a verse or phrase that stands out.
- O – Observation: What’s happening here? What does this teach me about God, people, grace, or faith?
- A – Application: How can I live this out today? Is there something to stop doing, start doing, or believe more deeply?
- P – Prayer: Turn what you read into a conversation. Thank God, confess, or ask Him to shape your heart around what you just read.
Keep it short, honest, and real — this isn’t about checking a box; it’s about hearing His voice.
📅 This Week’s Reading Plan
Theme: The gospel isn’t self-help — it’s grace for the helpless.
- Mon – Ephesians 2:1–10 You were dead, not just struggling — and God made you alive by grace.
- Tue – Luke 18:9–14 The Pharisee and the tax collector — which prayer sounds more like yours?
- Wed – Titus 3:3–7 “Not because of righteous things we’ve done, but because of His mercy.”
- Thu – Psalm 121 Our help doesn’t come from within — it comes from the Lord.
- Fri – John 15:1–5 Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing — stay connected to the Source.
👀 Things to Look For While You Read
- What do these passages reveal about who does the saving — me or God?
- How do I see the difference between grace and earning?
- Where do I see my own tendency to “help myself” instead of depending on God?
- What does “help” really mean in the Bible — how is it different from “assistance”?
- How can these verses shape my prayers this week?
As you read, remember: Grace isn’t opposed to effort; it’s opposed to earning. You don’t have to prove yourself — you just have to come to the One who already proved His love for you.
Open the Book this week. Let God’s Word correct the words He never said — and refresh your soul in the process.
